Here's What We'll Cover in Your Consultation

Most mortgage providers insist you buy homeowner insurance because it is designed to help you cover yourself against potentially costly events or disasters. You are typically covered against damage caused by the following events.

Malhotra & Associates Insurance | Ashland Team

Frozen Plumbing

Most home insurance policies cover ‘sudden and accidental’ discharge of water from a plumbing source. Damage caused by frozen pipes usually qualifies as ‘sudden and accidental.’

Falling Objects

Objects falling from the sky, including satellites, asteroids, meteors, and space debris—are covered under standard homeowners and business insurance policies.

Water Damage

Water damage includes damage caused by appliances, HVAC, plumbing, or water heaters. Standard homeowners insurance policies do cover some costs associated with water damage, but not all types of water damage are covered.

Fire and Smoke

Most homeowners and renters will be protected for fire damage through their normal home insurance, as coverage is included in typical homeowners and renters insurance policies.

Hail Damage

Hail damage is one of the most common claims on homeowners insurance, accounting for almost 70 percent of insured property losses.

Flood

It is important to know that most home insurance policies do not cover flood insurance. This is a separate policy that is purchased in addition to your homeowners insurance. If you purchase flood insurance, it’s important to know what will and won’t be covered. Items typically not covered are items damaged by mold or mildew, cars, and personal property in the basement of the house.

Windstorm

Windstorm coverage is typically affixed as a rider to a homeowners insurance policy.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Home Insurance

What Does a Home Insurance Policy Typically Cover?

Although all home insurance policies are different, most policies will cover the same basics such as property damage, personal property loss, and personal liability. You can work with your agent to determine how much coverage you need for each of these aspects of home ownership. These common occurrences can be financially challenging to come back from without insurance, which is why it is important to make sure you understand what you are and are not covered for.

What is the Difference Between Renter’s Insurance and Condo Coverage?

Condos

Condos are protected under the HO-6 insurance policy, which is tailored specifically for condo owners. Condo insurance covers your personal belongings and liability, as well as the physical unit; but it doesn’t cover the entirety of the condo’s structure. That should be covered under the homeowner’s association’s coverage.

Renter’s Insurance

Renters insurance is similar to homeowner’s insurance, except that it doesn’t cover the physical dwelling. The structure of your apartment or other rented property should instead be covered by your landlord’s insurance. Renters insurance covers your personal belongings from fire, theft, vandalism and more. It typically doesn’t cover flood or earthquake damage, but this can be added to your coverage if you would like it.

Is Home Insurance Required?

Some states require home insurance while others do not. However, if you have a mortgage or other loan out on your house, it is likely your bank with require proof of insurance, and possibly even proof of other policies such as flood insurance. Regardless of if you own your home or not, it is highly recommended that you carry a home insurance policy for the life of any home(s) you own in case of an emergency. This could potentially save you from incurring unexpected and potentially life-altering expenses if something were to happen to your home.
