What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a public health program offered by the federal government. The benefits are available to people who are age 65 or older, and younger people who have been diagnosed with qualifying disabilities.

Medicare benefits can be acquired by applying for them through the Social Security Administration. If you’re eligible, you may be automatically enrolled in Medicare. Whether this happens often depends on if you’ve already begun collecting Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits.

Medicare Parts

There are four primary parts of Medicare:

  • Part A
  • Part B
  • Part C
  • Part D

Each part administers different benefits to members of Medicare and you must enroll in all parts separately. Below, you’ll find more information about each part.

Medicare Enrollment

If you’re not automatically enrolled in Medicare, you’ll need to submit an application to receive benefits. To submit a Medicare application, you can either head to the Social Security website or submit an application in person at a local Social Security office.

One important factor to note about Medicare is that when you have reached the age of eligibility, it’s best to enroll as soon as possible. This is because if you delay your enrollment for too long, you could face late enrollment penalties. At Malhotra & Assoc. Insurance, we don’t want you to face these penalties, so we’re here to help you through the enrollment process.

Three months before your 65th birthday, the first enrollment period will begin, which is known as the Initial Enrollment Period. This period will last for seven months, allowing you to enroll in Medicare for the first time. If you’re currently receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare and will not have to worry about enrolling yourself during your Initial Enrollment Period.

Part A

Medicare Part A is the first part of Original Medicare. Original Medicare consists of Parts A and B and it provides all basic benefits to Medicare beneficiaries. Part A is the hospital insurance component and it covers inpatient hospital stays as well as care administered in other health care facilities.

Part A benefits can be acquired free of cost if you’ve paid appropriately into Medicare taxes. If you haven’t, you will need to pay monthly premiums to maintain Part A coverage. Even if you have premium-free coverage, you will still be responsible for deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Part B

Medicare Part B is the second part of Original Medicare. It provides medical insurance to Medicare beneficiaries. With Part B coverage, you can pay for a variety of medically necessary and preventive services. Here are some services covered by Part B of Medicare:

  • Clinical Research
  • Mental Health Care
  • Ambulance Services
  • Durable Medical Equipment
  • Surgeries
  • Check-ups
  • Exams
  • Diagnostic Tests

Part B coverage cannot be acquired premium-free. You must pay premiums as well as deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, and excess charges.

Part C

Medicare Advantage is the third part of Medicare. Medicare Advantage, or Part C, is the portion of Medicare that administers private Medicare health plans.

Part C plans must include all Part A and B benefits. Unlike Original Medicare, additional benefits can usually be provided. These are some common Part C plan benefits:

  • Transportation
  • Meal Delivery
  • Dental Coverage

Part C plans also don’t have standard prices. Your Medicare Advantage plan will be priced based on your location as well as other factors. To find out how to apply, contact one of our Medicare Agents.

Part D

Like Part C plans, Part D plans are privately sold insurance policies. However, Part D plans are not major health insurance plans. Instead, these plans provide Medicare beneficiaries with prescription drug coverage. There are many plans available, each with different covered drugs. Which drugs are covered and how much they cost will depend on the plan you sign up for. So, shop with a qualified insurance agent to find the right prescription drug plan for you.
