If you plan on having Medicare benefits, you are getting ready to reach a major milestone in your retirement planning. In some cases, you may not have to apply for Medicare because some people are enrolled automatically. However, if you aren’t enrolled automatically, you will have to sign up for benefits.
If you haven’t already been enrolled in Medicare, here’s how you can apply:
The Medicare application process can usually be completed online. It typically takes less than 20 minutes to complete, making it simple for most to apply. You can also apply over the phone or at your local Social Security office. If you apply in person, you may need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship and a birth certificate.
You can enroll in Medicare during the set enrollment periods. Some of the enrollment periods are fixed periods that occur throughout the year, while others are specific to the individuals who receive them. For example, the Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before you turn 65. It ends three months after your 65th birthday, providing you with a 7-month period to enroll in Medicare benefits.
If you miss this enrollment period, you can still apply for Medicare. However, there may be a late enrollment penalty. If you miss your Initial Enrollment Period, you can enroll during the General Enrollment Period. This period runs from January 1 to March 31 every year. If you enroll during this time, your benefits will begin on July 1.
If you’re unable to enroll during one of the typical enrollment periods, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period. These are unique enrollment periods that are granted to people who have recently experienced certain life events.
For example, people who have recently changed locations can qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Similarly, people who’ve been dropped from their employer coverage can also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
