What Is Part C?

The Social Security Administration contracts with certain insurers, allowing them to provide Medicare beneficiaries with their health care benefits. All Part C plans must have at least the same benefits as Original Medicare, ensuring that recipients receive all of the benefits they deserve.

Types of Part C Plans

There are several different types of Part C plans. Each one has different rules that dictate how you can use your coverage. These are the different types of Part C plans. 

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) – An HMO plan has a limited number of providers within their network. You must also have a primary care physician and get referrals for specialist care. 
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) – The PPO plan is a flexible option that allows members to seek care outside of their primary provider network. The members also don’t have to have a primary care physician or get referrals to see specialists. 
  • Private Fee For Service (PFFS) – These plans have set rates that they require health care providers to accept. If the facility does not accept their rates, the service will not be covered by your plan. 
  • Special Needs Plan – Special Needs Plans cover people with specific chronic conditions or disabilities. They provide benefits that are designed specifically for people in those situations.
