Medicare is a public health program that covers millions of Americans, but not all Americans are eligible for Medicare coverage. If you’re curious to know when Medicare eligibility typically starts and if you fall into that category, here’s what you need to know.

Medicare is not accessible to all Americans. You must meet certain criteria to qualify. The primary eligibility requirement is age-based. Typically, Medicare recipients must be at least age 65 before applying. This isn’t the only way to qualify for Medicare, but it is the most common.
People who are younger than age 65 are not completely unable to qualify for Medicare coverage. If you are below age 65 and have been diagnosed with a disability, you may be able to access Medicare benefits. In most cases, you need to collect Social Security Disability benefits for at least 24 months to become eligible for Medicare.
If you’ve been diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, you can access Medicare benefits much sooner. Sometimes as soon as a month after you’ve been diagnosed.
Not only are there general requirements for you to meet, there are certain requirements you must meet to also be eligible for each individual part of Medicare.
You can, of course, qualify for Medicare Part A by meeting the general requirements listed above. However, if you want to receive premium-free Part A at age 65, you will have to meet specific requirements:
If you are under 65, you can get premium-free Part A by:
Part B’s eligibility requirements are the same as Part A. However, you will have to pay a monthly premium with Part B.
To be eligible for Part C, you must first be enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and B). To be eligible for Part D, you can be enrolled in either Part A or Part B.
You can sign up for Medicare online or in-person at a local Social Security office. If you aren’t sure how to navigate the sign-up process, Malhotra & Assoc. Insurance can help you get enrolled. Contact us today to get started.
